Home/Air conditioner/Not cooling

Eight in ten dead air conditioners aren't broken. They're choked, mis-set, or suffocated.

Why air conditioners "stop cooling" (when they were never broken)

An air conditioner is a heat ferry: it picks heat up indoors and dumps it outdoors. Choke either end and the ferry stops — but nothing is broken. A dusty filter starves the indoor coil of air, a wrong remote mode asks for no cold at all, a fluff-blanketed outdoor unit can't dump the heat it collected. The machine keeps running; the cooling quietly quits.

Which culprit, by the symptom

One honest limit: thin copper pipe frosting over, a hissing sound at the joints, or a unit three-plus years old that cools worse every summer — that's refrigerant, and refrigerant work belongs to a certified technician. Never buy a can and top it up yourself, and distrust anyone who "recharges" without testing for the leak first.

Before you start. This is a simulated view, not your unit. Washing the filter means unplug first — not just the remote's off button. And if the indoor coil is icing, switch off and let it thaw before anything else: running frozen strains the compressor.
