Why toilets clog (and why the emergency move is doing nothing)

Every toilet drains through an S-shaped bend in the porcelain. Paper and waste pass; anything rigid or too bulky parks there. And the trap holds water — which is why a second flush doesn't "test" anything. It adds another tank of water on top of a sealed pipe.

That's the first move: lift the tank lid and hold the flapper down, or close the shutoff valve behind the toilet. Overflow prevented before it exists.

The three kinds of clog

When it's not the toilet: it clogs weekly, or the shower gurgles when you flush — the problem is downstream in the branch or main line. No plunger reaches that; snaking blind makes it worse.

Before you start. This is a simulated toilet. Real clogs splash — gloves and towels aren't optional, they're the difference between a fix and a cleanup. And a toilet auger has a rubber sleeve for a reason: porcelain glaze is what keeps the bowl from staining and cracking.
